We used to spend a bit of time in the bar opposite The Seagull restaurant with a Greek name which I could not pronounce, Myxvia or similar. It looks as if it's been knocked down from photos on this site.
We believed it may have been council owned and run as lots of locals used the adjacent diving boards and steps to get into the sea and there appeared to be public toilets joined on to the bar.
We used these facilities ourselves and would have a few beers as well as the swimming.
The question I'm asking is does anyone know if it is council owned and whether it is or it isn't are they likely to replace it because if they didn't they would be denying a lot of locals their daily dip would they not ? (not to mention my afternoon beers !)

Hi,
Some one told me that they'd heard that a new restaurant/bar is due to be built by the harbour while the work is in progress. Maybe someone knows more, otherwise we'll have to wait for the work to be completed.
I think that it was also said that bathing facilities - beach would be provided.

From what I have seen of the building you are talking about all the inner walls have been demolished just leaving the concrete shell,they have started to rebuild some interior walls again so I assume it will all be rebuilt, I also think they public swimming area will be retained in some form.

The restaurant opposite the Seagull is called Τα Μπάνια (Ta Bania - literally 'The Bathrooms' and a reflection on the fact that this complex was the Paphos Municipal bathing place and changing rooms). It is not being demolished, but refurbished. Whether it will be restored as a restaurant or as the bathing facility (or both) is not yet clear. Either way I don't see it being completed for Easter.

The new building under construction at the opposite end of the promenade is reputedly a replacement for 'Το Λιμανάκι' (To Limanaki) kiosk which has been removed from the corner position.

More work has been completed on the roadway since I took the pictures before Christmas.

Sad but true a lot of public works projects never get truly finished and when they are they are not maintained. How long this one will take is anyone's guess. The originally projected time scale was 3 months - and even though that is somewhat ambitious, I would think they would have broken the back of it and the roadway section should be open again and the barricades removed - but I wouldn't put money on it.

Kato Paphos has long been in need of a major facelift. You cannot do this without disruption. The winter is as good a time as any.

The development has all the makings of a new and giant car park Sad

Even more interesting is how those shops that have spread on to the footpath area have been lopped back to their true boundaries. A particular example is the diamond shop on the corner opposite MacDonalds which has lost a few feet of the expensively upgraded forecourt that was only completed a few months ago.

Hi Jill

This is the main road along the sea front heading from Cafe Vienna towards the harbour and fort - looks totally different doesn't it? I haven't been down myself, but the little building on the left is the little restaurant come swimming place, come toilets before the first taxi rank, and across the road from McDonalds

One thing I can't understand is where is all the traffic going to go now it can't go along the sea front? The back streets are very narrow and busy enough as it is. Is the idea that people use the new dual carriage way?

It is not going to be traffic free but I have been informed a one way system, someone on the site has seen plans, maybe they can confirm this.

Traffic free? That'll be a first. Unless the footpaths are raised to about half a metre, with narrow steps down to the road, it will be a car park for taxis and delivery drivers. It is already chaotic as Cypriot drivers just don't get one way streets.

A permanent force of tourist uniformed police/wardens tasked with keeping the footpaths clear of parked cars and the resort clear of time share touts would certainly enhance the new facilities when they are 'finished'.

My last photo was taken from outside the Seagull restaurant (next to the Porto Paphos Hotel).

Sorry I must have got the wrong idea but I thought someone had said it was going to be pedestrianised. It makes more sense now if it is going to be one way. Mind you they never stick to one way anyway. The road outside Debenhams is a good example and the one at the side of MacDonalds! We will wait and see what happens.

This is an absolute disaster. Where are the Time share touts going to hassle the tourists now that the kiosk has gone?????

Worry not - the kiosk is being rebuilt as a more permanent structure a few metres down the road, and the time share touts are still much in evidence despite the road works.

Have to say that that last picture showing the hoardings which conceal the rather tacky appearance of some of the shop fronts is actually an improvement! Hope that when the land fill/road rebuilding is finished that the shop owners will improve their appearance to complement the upgrading of this area. We shall see!

There seemed to be a shortage of manpower to spread sand, or anything else for that matter. Has anyone told them the finishing date.
The businesses behind the baricades must really be suffering. In fact I heard of an opticion who is closing and moving staff to other branches. Possibly just untill all opens up again.

'tis true, optician George, emptied his shop
today and moved the girl and specs up to
his other branch.

Many gift shops etc. ARE having to demolish
the overhangs in front of their shops which
seemingly were installed without permission.

Before Emma got her current job, she was interviewed by an opticians along the harbour front. She got the job, but unfortunately, the vacancy was postponed until the works are complete, so it must be hitting many businesses hard.

Although there are works a plenty on the promenade, The harbour is still a place to enjoy in the sun......

And I hope you all realise in wetter and colder areas. We are only out and about in the sun taking these pictures because we feel it is our duty.
And you will have to excuse us sometimes when we have to stop off for a cold beer.

There is plenty of fresh sea air here. And indeed where we live plenty of fresh mountain air as well. Even if the temperature here did get down to minus 0.8c last night. The coldest night of the winter. But, outside now it is very hot sitting in the sunshine. Not quite like the roof terrace on the Midland though. Wink

hello all just got back 6 o clock this morning from 2 weeks hols really enjoyed apart from been ill the 1st week,the harbour area is a mess but did'nt stop us going down there by the time we were coming home there were no shops open along the front at all,but still the touts what a pain just won't take no for an answer just tell them to go away but with a big P off.Got some more info so fingers crossed by the end of the year will be out there,met Lesley in Ben's (good out fit) and new people in Seahorse very helpfull and friendly hope all goes well for you.Happy New Year to all.
